Trakt sync for everyone in the house

The question: how do I sync Trakt for more than one person, without holding everybody's password?

Most Plex-to-Trakt tooling is built for one account — yours. A house with five people has five Trakt accounts, five different ideas of what counts as watched, and at least one person who has never heard of Trakt and never will.

What Kustos does

  • Each person links their own account. You send them a link; they authorise on Trakt's own site and Kustos hears the outcome. You never see or store their password.
  • Pulling in is always on; writing out is a choice, per person, per service. Kustos reads everybody's history whatever the switches say. What it sends back is three independent switches on their card — Push to Plex, Push to Trakt, Push to Simkl. Turning one on never turns on another.
  • Both directions means both switches. Somebody who watches on Trakt and wants Plex to catch up needs Push to Plex; somebody who watches in Plex and wants Trakt to know needs Push to Trakt. Both on, and their watches travel both ways.
  • It works for people who never used Trakt. Push to Plex writes the merged history back into Plex as that person, which is what restores their progress after a rebuild.
  • The sync runs every 6 hours, and it is opt-in per person — with nobody switched on it does nothing at all rather than sitting there failing.

See People & History — what needs a token and what doesn't.

Two things that catch people out

  • A public Trakt profile is read-only. You can record one and read the list, but nothing can be written to it until that person actually links the account. That is Trakt's rule, not Kustos's.
  • Watchlists are a different pair of settings, on a different screen, and one of them deletes. Sync mirrors a watchlist — it adds what is missing and removes what is not in the others, from somebody else's account, with no undo. Append only ever adds. See Watchlists.

Where Kustos does not help. Trakt alone reports at series level, so it cannot tell you somebody is four episodes into season three. Per-season accuracy needs a per-episode source — Plex history, if you have it enabled, or Tautulli. Kustos says unsupported rather than guessing, which matters most when a cleanup rule is about to act on the answer.
