Set up a person properly
The one decision that matters is whether you need push as well as pull, because only push needs anything from them.
- Go to People & History. Everyone your Plex server knows is already listed, friends included — you do not add anybody.
- Do nothing at all if you only need pull. Watch history, cleanup protection and who-has-watched-what work for everyone with no token. Kustos reads on the admin token, the same basis Tautulli uses.
- Get their own Plex token only if you need push. That means turning their watchlist into requests, or writing Kustos's merged history back into Plex for them.
- Link Trakt or Simkl if you want them in Suggestions — see Getting your keys. Rows on their Plex home screen need no Trakt at all, so this is optional for most households. Trakt also takes a public profile instead: type their Trakt username on the card and Kustos reads their watchlist and lists from it, with nothing to approve and no token that can expire. It is read-only, which is all most households need.
- Set their cleanup tags if you use per-person keep and rewatch lists.
- Give them their own MDBList key if you use MDBList lists, ratings or suggestions for them. This one is per person on purpose: the install-wide key would hand everybody the owner's lists, which is a wrong answer rather than an error. The card flags anyone missing one. The admin and any absorbed account do not need their own.
- Set "Catch up earlier episodes" if they binge out of order. It is how long after a later watch their earlier unwatched episodes still count, in days, per person — so somebody who watches season 3 first does not have seasons 1 and 2 treated as abandoned.
Restoring somebody's progress after a rebuild is the push case worth knowing about: Kustos writes its merged history back into Plex for them, and it works even for people who never used Trakt.
A question you will be asked once per link. When a Trakt or Simkl link completes, Kustos asks what to date a fully-watched item that arrives with no date — those services often hold "watched" with no "when". The choices are the release or air date, today, or skip it. The default is the release date, and you can change the answer later from Watch dates… on that person's linked row in Connections. Choosing "not now" simply means you get asked again. A part-watched item is never dated.
