Suggestions
Needs an AI key. The suggestion lists need one. Shelf rows build without it as plain unranked rows; a key ranks them. Budget: the lists cost about one call per person per day, but shelf rows cost one call per row on each rebuild, so a household with many rows can go past a free tier's daily limit (about 20 calls per key per model). Add spare keys under Connections so they take over when the first runs out. See Getting your keys → Which features need something extra.
What to watch next, worked out per person rather than for the household.
Each person gets their own list, built from what they have actually watched — their Trakt history, their Plex plays, and what they have asked for. Every pick carries a one-line reason, because a recommendation you cannot argue with is a recommendation you cannot correct.
Three things you can do with a pick:
- Add to list puts it straight onto that person's list on whichever service they use (Trakt, Simkl or MDBList). This is a write to their account.
- Not now puts it aside and lets it come back later.
- Never takes it out of consideration for good.
Shelf rows — one row per person, built from what they have not watched
A shelf row is a Plex row Kustos builds and keeps. The model picks from your shelf, so it can only ever suggest something you already own — that is the difference between a shelf row and a recommendation service.
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Per person | Rows are turned on or off per person, beside their other suggestion settings. |
| Order | Where this row sits among the rows in its library. Lower numbers first, and every person's copy of the row shares the number, so the household sees the same ordering. Blank uses the default. |
| Kind | Whether the row is built for movies, shows, or both. |
One row type behaves differently. A row named after a title somebody finished produces one row per person per title — so a household of four who have each finished something get four rows. Every other row type makes a single row per person.
Where they actually show up
The lists are not only a Kustos screen. Kustos writes them back as rows on that person's Plex home, so the suggestions arrive where they were already going to look:
Each row is headed with the person it is for, so a household sharing one server does not share one set of recommendations. The posters are whatever your templates and overlays produced — the rows are ordinary Plex collections, so they wear the same artwork as everything else.
You can act on several at once by selecting them first.
Suggestions need an AI key. Without one, nobody's list is built; the nightly run skips each person and logs why. Shelf rows are the exception: they still build, as plain unranked rows. Where to get a free key is covered under AI keys.
The settings live in one place. Household defaults and per-person overrides are both under Settings -> Suggestions, described in the settings reference. Anything a person leaves on Follow household keeps following it, including when you change it later.
